Like eagles, the maker of the universe created us to scale the heights. To mount up with wings like eagles and not quack like ducks! Despite this eagle set up in me, sometimes I wake up feeling like a Hippo and simply wanting to wallow in the mud, during the day I feel like a donkey and have to be hard-pressed to perform. Come evening, I am a flat chicken, scratching, brooding and scared of the vulture!
The eagle in me keeps flapping its wings, but the chicken in me sees things differently. First, it’s scared of heights and secondly…chicken don’t fly. Period! So it chickens out. But the flapping of wings continues.
This is got to be ‘an eagle with a chicken mentality’. I want to free my wings and fly away, high up in the sky. The natural environment for eagles, where they soar without flapping wings!
Hallo. Have you ever found yourself in a similar predicament? If it’s a yes, I invite you to read on.
The analogy the bible uses in the book of Isaiah and psalms is an amazing one ‘…shall mount up with wings like an eagle’ …‘renew their strength like the eagles.
With wings
When I was young , I was also adventurous. Catching the birds for roasting to me was a game. One way I made sure the birds didn’t escape after ensnaring them was by breaking their wings, and when I was in good moods, I would tie the wings instead. (I have since been forgiven) An Eagle, the king of the heights is more aggressive and hard to catch, but If you succeed, the rule is the same…catch them by the wings!
History is not lacking in men and women who have been ensnared and their ‘wing movement’ restricted by things that reduce them to less than the maker dreamt. People reduced to ‘cabbages’ due to abuse of drug, for example, cannot understand and maximize their God designed potential potential.
The strings that tie our wings, leaving us worse off than chicken are most of the time our own making. These are things that make it impossible for us to scale the heights of any activity we undertake. From exercising our talents, giftings, passions, visions and dreams to completing a worth project Things such as fear of failure, lack of self confidence, past experiences, laziness, pride and all manner of character flaws become ‘the strings that tie our wings’ ‘They sink our ship, deflate our soaring balloons or shoot us in the foot’ and until we can face them straight and phase the out, they become like the string tied to a kite, they dictate how high we can fly!…Sometimes bringing us tumbling down. Then we keep on repairing the tyre without taking the initiative to remove the spike on the road that causes the puncture…so we keep on being derailed.
Renew your strength
After we have flown many miles, we need to relax and from the source and giver of life, have some new lease of being. Drink from the pool of God’s grace and mercy ‘… where sin is forgiven, its power subdued and its penalty averted. Then we are honored, supplied, and our very own nature renovated till we are as new-born children in the God’s household’ Have time with yourself, evaluate how high you have flown and how further you can soar. Pray, laugh and play. As P.L.O Lumumba would put it, remember ‘Exclusive dedication to necessitous chores without interludes of hedonistic diversion renders John a hebetudinous fellow’ which simply means… ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’
This way we remain as vigorous and full of energy as an eagle, raising above the storms that will inevitably come our way!
Am working on mine, work on yours…and lets meet ‘up there’

I like the idea that we eagles who sometimes harbour chicken mentality. So for me, I will work on doing away with this chicken mentality and claim my rightful position; an eagle.
